Étude 1 - between the artificial and the natural, 2020
Electronic Music
5 min 20 sec
Natalia Dominguez Rangel started a new series of “Études” throughout these days of isolation due to COVID-19.
Étude 1 was inspired by the thought of listening to digital produced sounds intertwined with natural sounds. How do we perceive and listen to these two realities? The piece consists of field recordings of diverse bird songs at dawn and early evenings from the region of Anapoima in Colombia orchestrated with artificial bird calls.
These digital mimicries display an alternative way of listening and association. A natural digital cacophony floating on a distant harmonic cluster.
Natalia Dominguez Rangel born in 1981 in Bogotá (CO) is a composer / sound artist living and working between Vienna (AT) and Amsterdam (NL)
Domínguez Rangel’s work connects closely to critical listening, anything related to the characteristics of sound and all physical qualities that articulate space. She is interested in how sound affects and resonates with an audience physiologically and psychologically and how space and specifically acoustic space make one think of time, ecology, technology, and architecture.
Sound is power; it can be a source of both pain and pleasure.
She has been performed and exhibit at Muziekgebouw aan’t IJ, Amsterdam; Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, UK; IMPULS Academy 2013, Graz Gaudeamus Muziek Week, Amsterdam; Young Composers Meeting, Apeldoorn; Korzo Theater, The Hague; Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; Stedelijk Museum de Lakenhal, Leiden; Stichting Mediamatic, Amsterdam; SPRING Festival, Utrecht; Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven; Nederlands Fashion Week; Felix & Foam, Amsterdam; Artecámara, Bogotá;ZODIAK, Helsinki; SALON/dantel Istanbul Design Biennale, Istanbul; Dan Gunn Gallery, Berlin among others.
Zeller van Almsick is a gallery based in Vienna committed to an upcoming generation of Austria-based artists, aiming to introduce younger positions to the cultural sector and the art market. Through the initially nomadic projects in various cities and venues, and since 2017 in our own gallery space, Zeller van Almsick has had the chance to work and intensify the collaborations with artists, curators, and collectors, expanding our network to an international art circuit. The gallery supports spatial explorations as a central feature in their projects, focusing on painting and its expanded qualities.
