Natalia Dominguez Rangel started a new series of “Études” throughout these days of isolation due to COVID-19.

Étude 1 was inspired by the thought of listening to digital produced sounds intertwined with natural sounds. How do we perceive and listen to these two realities? The piece consists of field recordings of diverse bird songs at dawn and early evenings from the region of Anapoima in Colombia orchestrated with artificial bird calls.

These digital mimicries display an alternative way of listening and association. A natural digital cacophony floating on a distant harmonic cluster.

Domínguez Rangel’s work connects closely to critical listening, anything related to the characteristics of sound and all physical qualities that articulate space. She is interested in how sound affects and resonates with an audience physiologically and psychologically and how space and specifically acoustic space make one think of time, ecology, technology, and architecture.

Sound is power; it can be a source of both pain and pleasure.

Zeller van Almsick is a gallery based in Vienna committed to an upcoming generation of Austria-based artists, aiming to introduce younger positions to the cultural sector and the art market.
